Scientists have discovered a huge "dead spot" in the north of the Gulf of Mexico. According to forecasts, this spot until the end of July will be more than the US state of Connecticut.

This is over 17 thousand square kilometers of the shelf from Louisiana to Texas. Dead piece of the ocean the size of Israel.

Such sites are called "dead", because in water the very low oxygen content and living creatures in it die.

The scientists found that farmers and nitrogen fertilizers are all to blame, which fall into the Mississippi, and then into the Gulf of Mexico. Nitrogen and phosphorus cause the active growth of unicellular algae, and they begin to bloom and in the process absorb oxygen.
