Climate change is one of the most acute problems of mankind. What consequences it brought and will bring to Ukrainian farmers, said the head of the department of agrometeorology of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center Tatyana Adamenko, reports Agroportal. UA.
The rise in air temperature in the summer, she said, is really a big threat to agriculture, which can not be said about winter. For example, due to warming, the wintering conditions for winter crops have improved - the freezing areas have decreased and the wintering period has decreased.
For spring crops this is a reduction in the vegetative period, that is, early cultures ripen faster than they were before. If spring barley should vegetate 80-90 days, then due to the increase in temperature, this period decreases to 60-70 days, and as is known, the shorter the life of plants, the worse they yield.
It is characteristic that virtually the entire territory of Ukraine underwent climatic changes. The greatest changes are observed in the northern regions, namely, in the Kiev, Sumy, Chernigov, Zhitomir and other regions..
If 20-30 years ago corn did not ripen in all regions, in recent years it has ripened everywhere, even in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, where earlier less heat accumulated and only early hybrids could be grown.
For the sunflower, "native" were the southern and south-eastern regions, and now it ripens well everywhere. It is interesting that sunflower as a drought-resistant culture began to yield higher yields in those areas where there is a high moisture content.
Therefore, the expert believes, farmers should be aware of the situation, especially in periods when everything is changing very quickly: they need to contact the Hydrometeorological Service and the nearest meteorological stations, be interested in trends.
Regarding the immediate changes, Tatiana Adamenko suggests warming and melting snow from March 30. Further, the situation will change every day, for agrarians the main thing is that the night temperatures should stabilize and be positive. Forecast frost in early April, there are no grounds.
