One of the dangers of a trucker's work is the chance to fall asleep while driving during a long trip and lose control. The company Ford has created for the drivers a smart cap that tracks the movements of the head and does not allow to fall asleep, writes Haytek with reference to Fast Company.
Clever headwear is called Ford SafeCap. The device was based on studies that determined which movements of the head are characteristic for work, and which indicate fatigue and loss of attention. The cap is equipped with a sensor and a gyro, as well as special software that reads their readings. Having discovered that the driver falls asleep, she will warn him with the help of sound, light or vibration.
While the development, created in conjunction with the creative agency GTB branch in Brazilian Sao Paulo, is only a concept that may not enter the market. But Ford already has the experience of turning an unusual concept into a real commercially successful product. Earlier this year in Spain, the company introduced a smart crib that mimicked the movement of the car to help children fall asleep. Interest in it was so great that the development was made available to all car buyers.
The company hopes that SafeCap will receive a similar reception. After demonstrating the cap at the largest auto show in South America, the manufacturer received thousands of inquiries about how and where to buy the product. Ford believes that this project, which began as an initiative for the local market, has the potential far beyond Brazil. SafeCap testing is ongoing and work on scaling the project. Manufacturers hope to cooperate with high-tech companies to improve the product.
