In Hungary, the staff of the Department of Constitutional Law of the University of Debrecen wrote a statement in which they oppose the decision of the academic council of the university on August 28 to confer the title of honorary doctor to the president of the country-occupier of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. This is reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the statement.

"Praising autocrats for us is unacceptable, it contradicts everything that we represent in our academic work," the teachers expressed their position.

Scientists of the Department of Constitutional Law are outraged that the Senate of their university "neglected the merits of those honorary doctors who, with their selfless labor in the rear of science and education, created the prestige of the university".

These requirements were agreed by the Institute of Carol Eotvos, who in an open letter asks the University of Debrecen to recall the honorary doctorate from Putin, as well as the public youth organization from Debrecen Nativ. More than 900 people signed the Nativ petition.

"We are talking about a person about whom the Council of Europe unequivocally stated that he (Putin, - ed..

) Supports the war in the east of Ukraine, in which more than 10,000 people lost their lives and for which millions of people became internally displaced, "Nativ explained the motives for writing the petition.

August 24, 2017 it became known that the Senate (Academic Council) of Debrecen University promulgated a decree on conferring on Putin the title of honorary doctor of this institution.

The Scientific Council explains its decision by the fact that "the government of Hungary and Russia assigns to Debrecen University a significant role in the investment project for the construction of the second stage of the Paksh-2 NPP".
