Englishman Wayne Rooney is close to being named head coach of the Birmingham City Championship, reports BBC Sport journalist Aaron Paul.

According to Paul, the 37-year-old Ekkermanich of Washington DC United will soon arrive in Birmingham to sign with the club. It looks like the new coaching staff will include Irishman John O'Shea and Englishman Ashley Cole.

After 11 rounds of the Championship, Birmingham City sits in the sixth place in the tournament table, which allows them to take part in the playoffs for promotion to the Premier League.
