The current World Cup was extremely unsuccessful for teams from Africa.
The departure of Senegal means that there will not be a single team from Africa in the 2018 World Cup playoffs. This happened for the first time since the 1982 World Cup.
In 1982, when 24 teams took part in the tournament, Cameroon and Algeria could not leave the groups.
Since then, the group has been overcome by at least one African team: Morocco (1986), Cameroon (1990), Nigeria (1994, 1998), Senegal (2002), Ghana (2006, 2010), Nigeria and Algeria (2014).
At the World Cup in 2018, Egypt and Morocco took the last places in their groups, Senegal and Nigeria - the third, while Tunisia will take the third or fourth place after the match with Panama, but no longer has a chance at the playoffs.
