The first match in the history of MLS, in which San Jose Clece hosted Dee C United, took place exactly 22 years ago.

Exactly 22 years ago, on April 6, 1996, the first match in the history of MLS.

More than 30,000 fans gathered at the Spartan Stadium to see live the San Jose Clash meeting (now known as San Jose Airtways) and Di C United. Also at the match was FIFA President Joao Havelange, and ESPN showed the game live.

The only goal in the match, and concurrently the first goal in the history of the league, scored forward San Jose Eric Vinald. Subsequently, this goal was voted the best of the season.

Despite the defeat, it was DJ C United under the leadership of Bruce Arena won the first title in the history of MLS.
