Tottenham Hotspot Harry Kane told about himself for The Players Tribune. The Englishman told about the trail of Arsenal in his career, the difficult stages of his life and the importance of relatives in the formation of top-bombardier.
Failure is a funny thing when you're a child. I remember that day so well. It was a park right behind our house in Chingford, and I always went there with my dad and brother to play football. We did not need goals and class transfers. The grass cover and two trees - and we were happy. At that time, I played for Arsenal's youth team. Was, so to speak, on the other side of the barricade, but it was a great opportunity.
So, one day, when I was eight, I walked to the park with my father, and he was intrigued: "I must tell you something".
I said, "Yes, what happened?".
Then I remember him hugging my shoulder, and he said, "Well, Harry. Arsenal does not count on you anymore ".
I can not remember what I felt at that moment. Honestly, I do not even think that I really understood the significance of what happened. I was too young. But I remember how my father reacted. He did not criticize me, did not criticize Arsenal. Did not even look particularly concerned about this.. Just said, "Do not worry, Harry.. We will work harder and find another club, okay? ".
Looking back, you would think that I was upset. And many fathers, if they desperately needed their son to become a professional football player. they would react quite differently, I suppose. But my dad, no matter what happens - never exerted any pressure on me. He was always positive. His classic line, in any situation, was: "Let's take this and we'll work". And that's what we did..
After the Arsenal, I played for the local team, and then I noticed the scout of Watford, who offered to watch. Funny how it all happened - after the game Watford against Tottenham, I got the opportunity to join the youth academy "Spurs". I guess the white kit suits me better. I remember the first time we played against Arsenal. It may seem ridiculous - I was only eight when I was released, but every time we played against them, I thought: "Well, let's see who was right and who is not". Probably the best thing that ever happened to me, because it gave me a drive that was not there before.
Very happy that he reached 100 goals in the Premier League. When Tottenham hired me for two years, there were so many moments when I was wondering if I could ever score at least one goal in the Premier League. But over the years I also learned a lot. I remember that I played for Millwall in 2012, and we were in the relegation zone. Fans of the team are known for their passion. They are on a different level. In one of my first games on "Den" the referee made the wrong decision. Only one wrong decision. Suddenly the fans began throwing on the field various objects. Officials were forced to stop the match for five minutes to make the crowd calm down. And you must remember - I was only 18 years old. I look around, and there's insanity.
When the season went on and we were still close to the relegation zone, some of the guys in the locker room began to say things that caught me by surprise. "Buddy, if we go down in class, my salary will be cut by half".
They were guys with young children at home, and that's when I started looking at the game differently. You begin to understand that some people do not just play football, but to feed their families. You begin to understand how delicately everything can be - and that in football everything you worked on can disappear in an instant. My experience in Millwall made me realize that I just can not be a child. It was an important instructive period for me - I do not think that my good performances became a coincidence. More importantly, we have kept a residence permit. I have a good relationship with the fans of Millwall. Love them. even if they are sometimes a little crazy.
I hoped I'd done enough to stay in Tottenham for the next season. Unfortunately, they again sent me to rent, which was the beginning of a very difficult time. The most difficult moment was, probably, when I could not get into the squad in Leicester. At that time they were still in the Championships - I remember sitting in my apartment and experiencing this terrible realization: "If I can not play for Leicester in the Championship. how should he play for the "spurs" in the Premier League? ".
The first time in his career, the doubt crept up. My family arrived later that night - and we discussed for a long time. I told my father that I wanted to leave. It would be a terrible mistake, but I really doubted myself. Dad said: "Keep working. Continue, and everything will be alright.
A few weeks later, again, I sat in my apartment and accidentally stumbled upon a documentary about Tom Brady, who achieved tremendous success, although absolutely no one believed in him at the beginning of his career. Everyone has always doubted Toma. Even when he was in college, the coaches tried to replace him with another defender. They showed a picture of how he was weighing for the scouts and he took off his shirt. it's so funny, because Tom was just like an ordinary guy, you know? One coach said: "We look at this guy Brady, he's tall and slovenly, and it seems that he did not even see the gym".
He reminded me of. People always made the same assumptions: "You know, he does not look like a suitable attacker".
It really inspired me. Brady believed very much in himself - he just continued to work and work, almost obsessively, to recover. It may seem strange, but this flame hit me in the head that day, right on my couch in Leicester - and suddenly I said, "You know what? I'm going to do it. I'm going to work as hard as possible, and my chance will come, and I'm going to use it ".
A couple of matches we played against Millwall, my former team. One of the major defenders, I think, tried to intimidate me. He was right behind me during the face-off and said: "Oh, Harry".
I said, "Yes?".
He said: "I have not received a yellow card yet".
I said: "Ummm. So what? ".
And he: "Okay, because I'm going to use my limit on you".
Just trying to scare me. There is a throw-in. we both soar up and I accidentally hit him with the elbow in the ribs. He falls to the ground, wincing, and I also stepped on him, when he landed. You know, I did not even say anything. Just. stepped over it. This was my way of proving to everyone that I will not be mocked.
The following season, I returned to Tottenham and met with manager Andre Villash-Boasch. He wanted to send me out again, but the dream was to play in the Premier League. Play as a "spurs".
So I told him: "I do not want to leave".
He just looked at me, a little embarrassed.
I said: "I'm going to prove to you that I should play for this team. And you can tell me every Friday before the game that I do not deserve it, and that I will not play. And that's fine, but I do not want to leave.
He allowed me to stay and train with the first team - it really was a turning point in my career. I tried very hard in training, but still could not get the opportunity to play for Tottenham. Villash-Boasha was released in winter, and Tim Sherwood took responsibility - he gave me a chance. The rest, as people say, is history. I scored three goals in the first three games, and it was an incredible feeling, especially the first time, scoring at White Hart Lane. But, to be honest, everything that I did before I scored goal # 1. that's what made me who I am.
Obviously, when Mauricio Pochettino appeared next season, everything changed. Not only for me, but for the club. No one has had a greater impact on my career than Mauricio, and that's because he not only brought a fantastic management philosophy to the club, he also rallied us all. He had an amazing career, but he almost never talks about it. As a manager, he always helps players, whether the best player or the one who fights for a place in the team. Of course, if you do not want to work, you are lazy. then he is ruthless. That's all: you will not play, and the door to his office will not be open to talk to him. But if you respect him, and work a lot? Pochettino will give you all his time.
One of my most vivid memories in football is when I hat-tricked a few seasons ago. Mauricio called me to his office after the match. I did not know what he wanted, so I open the door. and he sits at a table with a glass of red wine - probably with a good Malbec or something else. A big smile on his face. And he waves to me and says: "Come in".
Then he hugged me, with a glass of wine in the other hand, and we took a picture. It was brilliant. It was the first time I thought, "Wow, this is a special person. Fantastic, fantastic person. I respect him as a manager and as a boss, of course, but he really is my friend outside of football. This is the reason why our team has become so close - we are true comrades, and I think that this is rarely found in football these days.
For me, rejection is the best thing that ever happened to me. When I tied the shoelaces before the first North London derby back in 2015, I had a memory when I was 11, I played against the youth team of "Arsenal". It was like deja vu. Before each match, I always visualize the script in my head, exactly how I will score.
I scored twice that day. I remember walking around the field after the final whistle. and clapped in the direction of the fans. That was great.
It was not only about the Arsenal, but about something to prove to myself and the family that believed in me at every turn. Even when I was in Millwall, Norwich and Leicester, and even when I doubted that I could do anything at all.
Now, having scored 100 goals in the Premier League, it's really time for me to thank a few people.
Thanks to my fiancee Kate for supporting me when the results did not please.
Thanks to my father for embracing me in the park after Arsenal parted with me and my whole family, for what she told me when I was having the most difficult moment in my apartment in Leicester.
Thanks to my mom for the countless hours she gave me.
Thanks to my brother Charlie for playing with me for thousands of hours and sometimes letting me be Teddy Sheringham.
Thanks to Tom Brady for giving hope to the guys who look like they've never seen a gym in their life.
Thanks to all my teammates, especially the guys who came up to me during training, when I did not get into the squad, and they said: "You deserve to play, mate". This meant a lot to me.
Thanks to Mauricio Pochettino for choosing me as an attacker.
And thank you, of course, the fans of Tottenham. He dreamed of playing for "spurs" since childhood. For a long time my motivation was to just close my eyes and imagine how you score Arsenal in the Premier League. I did it several times and now my motivation is a bit different. Now, I close my eyes and imagine how I raise the Premier League trophy in our new stadium with my comrades. I would exchange the next 100 heads for this feeling.
We have been close to the past few seasons, but there is only one way to accomplish this task. I'm afraid this is quite an obvious answer. As my dad would say, we must continue to work to achieve the goal.
