Today's referendum in Spain can seriously affect both the club and international football of the country.

This morning in Catalonia, a vote began for the separation of the region from Spain and independence. Right now in La Liga stands just three clubs from Catalonia - Girona, Espanyol and Barcelona. In the case of the separation of Catalonia from Spain, the fate of these clubs "hang in the air".

Some functionaries even threatened the clubs with an exception from La Liga in the event of separation from Spain, and the sports minister assured that Barca, Girona and Espanyol could safely move to the Premier League or League 1.

Spanish media are now warning their Football Federation that FIFA will have all the powers to exclude the Spanish national team from the World Cup 2018 in the event that the Federation prohibits the Club of Catalonia to take part in the championship of Spain.

It is clear that the Federation can do this only if the region becomes independent.
