The intense duel lasted 2 hours and 44 minutes.. 21-year-old from Kiev (No. 34 WTA) beat the US Open-2019 champion (No. 44 WTA) in three sets - 2:6, 6:3, 7:6. In the decisive set, the Ukrainian managed to play three match points: one in the 10th game, and then two more in the 12th. After that, Martha put the squeeze on her opponent in a tie-break.

Note that this was the second meeting between Kostyuk and Andreescu. The Ukrainians managed to take revenge for the defeat in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Hua Hin (Thailand) in February this year. In the 1/8 finals of the competition in Washington, Martha's opponent will be the sixth racket of the world - the Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who automatically entered the second round.
