French swimmer Leon Marchand set a new world record in the 400m individual medley, beating 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.. It happened at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.. 21-year-old Marchand showed a time of 4:02.50 minutes, which is an absolute record in this discipline.

The previous record in the 400m individual medley (4:03.84) was set by Phelps at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.. It was the oldest personal world record in men's swimming and the last record held by Phelps.. Note that Marchand is now working with Bob Bowman, who used to be the coach of Phelps himself..

" It was great to get here and time is crazy. The best is yet to come. I train every day for this. I'm two seconds faster than my previous record. Broke a world record - it's extraordinary. Do not know what to say. I'm happy," Interestingly, Phelps himself came out to award the Frenchman "

American Carson Forster (4:06.56) won the silver of the planetary championship, and Daiya Seto of Japan won the bronze (4:09.41). The FINA World Championships started on July 14th and will run until July 30th..
