Polish referee Szymon Marciniak apologized to UEFA for attending an event hosted by far-right politician Slawomir Menzen.
Menzen is known for his homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks, and Marciniak was spotted among the guests of his meeting in Katowice on May 29.
The Pole was previously appointed as the chief referee of the Manchester City-Inter Champions League final, which will be held on June 10 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.. The referee was threatened with suspension due to this situation, but in the end, UEFA decided not to punish him in this way.
" I was misled and unaware of the true nature of this event. I did not know that this was connected with the Polish far-right movement, otherwise I would have answered with a categorical refusal,"
