Latvian football legend dies at 43

The tragic news was announced by the Latvian Football Federation.

Rubins managed to become a real legend of Latvian football. He has 117 caps and 10 goals for the national team.. In terms of the number of games in the national team, Rubins is the second in the history of local football after Vitaliys Astafievs, who spent 167 matches.

As part of the national team, the midfielder played in the final part of the European Championship in 2004 - this is still the highest achievement of the national team.

So, for the first time Rubins played for the Latvian national team in November 1998 in a friendly match against Tunisia, and the last time in October 2011 in Croatia. He holds the national team record for consecutive games played (59 games).



Rubins began his career in 1996 with the Latvian Audi.. Subsequently, he played for Esther (Sweden), Skonto (Latvia), Crystal Palace (England), Metallurg (Liepaja, Latvia), Inter, Qarabag and Simurg (all Azerbaijan). Three times he became the champion of Latvia and once - the champion of Azerbaijan. Rubins ended his playing career in 2012. A few years after that, he began working as a coach at the headquarters of Ogre, and in 2019 he was the head coach of Audi.
