The European Football Union (UEFA) plans to return the third European Cup tournament, which by status will be inferior to the Champions League and the European League.

As the German Bild writes, the Europa League plan to reduce from 48 to 32 teams. The new tournament, which is likely to become an analog of the Cup Winners' Cup, will also have 32 teams.

The Champions League will remain with the same number of participants - 32.

The start of the new club tournament is scheduled for season-2021/22, when UEFA will end the current cycle of marketing agreements with TV companies and sponsors.

UEFA believes that the introduction of the third European Cup tournament will increase the prestige of the Europa League, and will also give impetus to small football championships, such as the Scandinavian countries and Eastern Europe. They will have access to European cups and without the Europa League, which previously wanted to expand to 64 teams.

The last season with three European Cup tournaments was 1998/99. Then in Europe they played the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup.
