Heavy physical exercises can be replaced by vibrations of the whole body - this will also give the effect of losing weight, scientists said. The study, published in the journal Endocrinology, compares the benefits of biomechanical stimulation with regular exercise, the procedure of passive muscle training by the action of mechanical waves of a certain length and frequency. According to one of the developers of the project, McGee Lawrence, the tests showed that the vibration is not less than the exercises are effective in the fight against diabetes and obesity A team of scientists from the University of Augusta, Georgia, decided to explore the potential alternative sport - biomechanical stimulation (BMS). During the procedure, the patient stands, sits or lies on the apparatus with a vibrating platform. The mechanism vibrates and transmits energy through the body, and the muscles contract and relax.

Scientists from Georgia studied the effect of the procedure on mice. The study involved five-week-old mice. 50% were normal, and the rest were not genetically sensitive to leptin. Leptin is the hormone responsible for feeling saturated; animals without reaction to leptin are predisposed to overeating, and hence to obesity with diabetes.

The mice were divided into three groups: in one mice, the BMS procedure was performed, the participants in the second group ran daily in the wheel, and the representatives of the third group did not do any exercises. The study lasted three months. Each week the animals were weighed.

At the end of the experiment, genetically obese mice were progressing both from exercise and from BMS. Mice still weighed more than normal individuals, but gained less weight as a result of sport and biomechanical stimulation. Both that, and another increased muscle mass and insulin sensitivity.

It is not supposed that the BMS should completely replace the sport, but it can play an important role for patients who either can not train or are not trained enough.
