Scientists from the University of New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas discovered a new useful property of walking. It was found that walking contributes to the flow of blood into the brain, which in turn leads to improved memory and cognitive abilities of the person. The work of scientists was presented at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society in Chicago. Excerpts from the report are published on the Eurekalert portal.

In the course of the study, it was found that the shock of the foot during walking sends waves through the arteries that significantly alter and increase the delivery of blood to the brain.

At the same time, this effect appears less when walking, than when running, but it is much more pronounced than when riding a bicycle, say the researchers.

To such conclusions scientists came as a result of observation of 12 healthy young people. Participants in the study, being in an upright position, moved at a constant speed of about one meter per second, and the researchers tracked the blood supply to the brain with ultrasound.

"It's amazing that it took us so long to finally measure these obvious hydraulic effects on the bloodstream of the brain," noted the author of the study, Ernest Green.
