As you know, smoking is a very bad habit, which in the final leads to lung cancer. The best prevention of cancer in this case is a complete rejection of it, but those who have not yet fully realized the importance of this step can somewhat reduce the risk of the disease by starting to exercise.
A large-scale study conducted by Dr. Kathryn Shmitz of the University of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Pennsylvania, has lasted since 1986 and included about 42,000 women of the older age group. By 2002, the number of participants was 36,410, of which 777 people contracted lung cancer.
Of these: 125 did not smoke, 177 - smoked in the past, and 475 were regular smokers. In analyzing life histories, physical activity and other habits of the diseased, the researchers found that of the 475 smokers who contracted cancer, 324 women had very low physical activity, and 151 regularly exercised.
Among former smokers, the results were similar - in 82 cases, women exercised, in 95 - no.
The lowest risk of the disease was among those who exercised with moderate loads 4 times a week or with a high load 2 times a week.
Effects of physical exertion on the lungs of the smoker allowed several to clear the respiratory tract from the high content of carcinogens there that settle in the bronchi when smoking a cigarette.
However, researchers believe that even a 35% reduction in risk in smokers as a result of physical activity is a drop in the bucket compared to a 10-11 fold increase in the risk of the disease compared to non-smokers.
