Two-time Olympic champion in pole vaulting Elena Isinbayeva left the post of head of the supervisory board of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). Thus, she complied with the requirements of the World Doping Agency (WADA), which insisted on the resignation of Isinbayeva.
Member of the supervisory board of RUSADA, head of the sports conventions of the Council of Europe Sergey Hrychikov informed about the departure of the former sportswoman from his post, R-Sport reports.. This decision was made at the regular meeting of the supervisory board of the organization.
In mid-May, WADA named four conditions for the full restoration of the Russian agency's rights. A key requirement was the dismissal of the pole vaulter from the post of chairman of the RUSADA supervisory board until May 31. The WADA explained this point by the fact that Isinbayev was nominated to the Supervisory Board by the Russian Olympic Committee (OCD), and therefore she can not be considered an independent participant.
According to Khrychikov, after Isinbayeva's official resignation to RUSADA's charter, changes were made, according to which the chairman and vice-chairman of the Supervisory Board can not be representatives of the Olympic and Paralympic committees of Russia, as well as the government of the country.
"As soon as the changes to the charter will be approved by the general meeting of the members of RUSADA and registered with the Ministry of Justice, we can proceed to the election of a new chairman. Chairman will be Alexander Ivlev. At the next meeting of the Supervisory Board, which will be tentatively in the 20-th of June, the chairman will be elected, "- said Khrychikov.
Meanwhile, Isinabayeva will continue her activity on the supervisory board in a rank-and-file position: WADA does not object to this. According to Khrychikov, the former athlete "can bring great benefits in the fight against doping".
Representatives of WADA, putting forward the demand for the resignation of Isinbayeva, offered her to become the ambassador of the "pure" doping sport in Russia. In case of her consent, she would become the first person whom the agency would endow with such a status. However, the ex-sportswoman rejected this proposal.
Elena Isinbayeva headed the RUSADA Supervisory Board in December last year. The World Anti-Doping Agency protested this nomination. The agency statement said that it expected that "they will consult with him" before appointments to key posts in the Russian anti-doping sphere. The organization promised "to address its concerns directly to the Russian authorities in order to ensure the creation of an organization that fully complies with the World Anti-Doping Code".
Since RUSADA does not submit to WADA, foreign functionaries could not directly ban the election of Isinbayeva. Nevertheless, they found a way to force the Olympic champion to resign, calling this step an indispensable condition for the rehabilitation of RUSADA.
RUSADA activity was suspended by the WADA decision in November 2015, as WADA recognized it as not in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code. To date, the domestic agency is completing the reorganization, after which it will meet all international requirements, the main of which are independence, direct financing and educational work with federations for certain sports.
