During the Soviet era, the Ukrainian language was strongly influenced by the policy of Russification. The consequence of this process was that many original Ukrainian words were simply erased from use, replacing them with equivalents close to Russian.

During the Soviet period, the breakthrough sound [ґ], quite inherent in the Ukrainian language, was tried to displace. Even in those schools where it was studied, children were not taught to write the corresponding letter and were not told about words containing it. Among them is the noun " Children saw this bird every day in cities, but did not know what it could be called in their native language.

Everything that can be grown in the garden - greens and fruits - can be described in one word in Ukrainian.

And this word is “city”. In the USSR, this collective concept was almost never used, but “gorodina” was divided into varieties - vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, etc.. By the way, everything that is grown in gardens also has its own separate Ukrainian name - “garden”.

In the meaning of “solid ground” this noun could still be found in Soviet Ukrainian-language books. But it was no longer used to designate a continent or mainland. Although dictionaries recorded this meaning.
