Dictionaries of the Ukrainian language record its name as “shipshina”. It concerns both the flowering wild rose bush itself and its vitamin C-rich fruits.

It is interesting that both names - both Ukrainian and Russian - were formed approximately according to the same logic. They both descended from the word " Only the Russian word was formed by adding the two above-mentioned suffixes -ov- and -nik-.



This is a rather typical way for this language, it is enough to recall such words as “thorny”, “elephant”, “forty”, “cedar”, “gardener”, “official”, “temple”, “alkhovnik”, “culprit”. While in Ukrainian " “Templar” turns into “priest of the temple,” and “cedarwood” turns into “Siberian pine,” while there is no such word as “sorokovnik” in the Ukrainian language at all.
