Geraniums and Pelargoniums are beautiful flowering plants that can be easily grown from seed..

What is geranium?

Geraniums and pelargoniums are types of flowers that belong to the genus Pelargonium.. Geraniums are perennial flowers, while pelargoniums can be either annuals or perennials.. Both of them are originally from Africa, but now they can be found all over the world..

Is it difficult to grow geraniums from seeds No, but a gardener needs patience. Geranium seeds grow slowly, so it's best to start early if you want flowers this summer.. Otherwise, you can start them later, but they will bloom in a season.. Flowering may take 13 to 16 weeks.

How to Plant Geranium Seeds As with any seed start, make sure your containers are clean and sterilized.. You can plant seeds in any container with good drainage and soil.. Need to sterilize ordinary soil, or buy a new one in a bag.

Next, you need to do the following.

Fill the container 10 cm with the starter mix of earth.

Sow geranium flower seeds in cells or about half a centimeter apart in a container. You will later transplant them into larger containers so no deep soil is needed..

Geranium flower seeds need light to germinate..

Lightly sprinkle a small amount of potting mix over the seeds or use some vermiculite.

Press into the soil to ensure good contact with the seeds.. Geranium seeds need light to germinate..

Set the container in a tub or tray of cool water and let the soil soak it up.. You can also spray the surface with water to dampen it.. Bottom watering ensures you don't knock out the seeds.

Cover the container with plastic wrap, a dome, or something else to keep moisture in the container.

Pelargonium seeds need warmth. Place trays or containers in a warm area with bright diffused light. The temperature should be around 25 degrees or higher during the day and not fall below 18 degrees at night.

Since you need to start early, it is highly recommended to use a heating mat and lamps.

Watch for germination, which can vary from 1 to 4 weeks. If you start growing seeds in winter, you can grow them in a sunny south window, but it is best to use special light.

Leave the light on for 12-14 hours. Geranium sprouts or seedlings look like very thin sprouts. Fertilize once a week with a very dilute liquid fertilizer, 1/4th. Geranium seedlings will grow stronger day by day and in two months will be ready for planting in the garden.
