The European Commission has presented its strategy for using hydrogen as one of the most important energy sources when switching to clean technologies - it does not emit gases that contribute to climate change during combustion.

Brussels proposes to produce almost a million tons of this substance in the European Union by 2024, and 10 million tons by 2030. The legislative framework for this is being developed by a liberal European MP from Austria, notes Euronews.

“We need to clearly define what should be considered renewable green hydrogen and what not,” said Claudia Gamon. - Hydrogen is considered green, if they are used for decarbonization, then reduce carbon dioxide emissions in energy-intensive industries or to replace carbon, for example, in the production of steel. There will be no alternative to hydrogen in building a green economy, so you need to know how green hydrogen is. ”.

Hydrogen can be obtained from water using energy from renewable energy or minerals..

An activist of the ecological organization Friends of the Earth Europe is concerned that Brussels is creating a European alliance for clean hydrogen with the participation of oil and gas companies:.

“Some of the companies invited to this alliance have the biggest names in the fossil fuel industry, such as Shell and Snam,” says Tara Connolly. - They are not interested in producing hydrogen using renewable energy.. They are interested in Europe continuing to burn fossil fuels, including in the production of hydrogen, which in this case will itself contribute to climate change as fossil fuels, only under a different name "

Brussels chooses the shortest way to use the hydrogen potential not only for environmental, but also for technological, financial and industrial purposes.
