Vilnius authorities began to reorganize the movement in the historical center of Vilnius (Old Town) to make it more friendly for pedestrians.

Transit traffic in the Old Town will be banned, and cars will only be able to drive in four one-way areas. According to the city authorities, so far, about 40% of trips to the center of Vilnius are transit, due to which traffic jams form on the narrow streets of the Old Town, and buildings suffer from car exhaust. Vilnius' historical center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Europuls clarifies.

Since the beginning of May, four streets have become completely pedestrian, and on another roadway they have significantly narrowed, leaving only one lane. Summer cafes will appear on the vacant spot.

Other changes in the organization of automobile traffic will gradually take effect until the end of July.

In addition, the Old Town will open several new public transport routes in one-way areas. Low-emission electricity or biofuel buses will run on routes.

Other European cities also took advantage of the temporary lack of cars and people on the streets due to quarantine to speed up the reorganization of traffic. For example, more than 100 French cities have planned work to develop bicycle infrastructure, the same initiatives are in Milan and Brussels.
