The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine proposed to toughen the punishment for drunk driving and, in addition to fines, introduce an administrative arrest for 5, 10 or 15 days.

At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs wants to return responsibility for this offense from the Criminal Code to the Administrative Code.. The bill will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada in the coming weeks, Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko told ObozTV.

" It's just awful. And these are only those persons whom the patrol police stopped and issued. And how many were those who drove past and drove home drunk? "

In his opinion, the size of fines (despite significant amounts of up to 50 thousand UAH) does not stop those who want to get drunk at the wheel.

“At the same time, the procedure for filing a criminal offense from a documentary point of view is much more complicated than filing an administrative offense,” he said.

Gerashchenko also explained in which cases a driver can be sent to prison:.

" Depends on the grossness of traffic violations. If a person while drunk stopped at a patrol sign, the court can determine a fine.

If the driver still had to chase before stopping him - then there may be an arrest "

In case of repeated violation, 10-15 days arrest is proposed.

" And it doesn’t matter if it is a local council deputy or a millionaire. Please sit. Because there are rich people who do not want to call a taxi, but want to drive around the city drunk. And it often ends with terrible tragedies, "

The deputy minister called "

" Order a taxi service when a taxi driver gets behind the wheel of your car. But don’t drive while intoxicated, "
