Pope Francis honored the memory of the millions who died from the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. However, he prayed for peace in this country. “Let the grave wounds of the past be a call to all, so that such tragedies should never be repeated,” the pontiff said after the prayer on Sunday, November 25, on St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, reports DW.

On the eve of Ukraine, commemorative events dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor took place, the cause of which is considered forced collectivization by the Soviet authorities and the confiscation of grain from the peasants. Kiev calls the Holodomor a targeted genocide of the Ukrainian people. The Vatican, like some other countries, has joined this definition.
