Just over half of Ukrainians are ready to defend Ukraine with weapons in their hands - survey results

According to a survey conducted by the Sociological Group "Rating" in September-October 2018, 52% of respondents expressed readiness in case of a corresponding threat to uphold the territorial integrity of Ukraine with arms (in 2017 there were 54% of such respondents, 2012 - 33%). Most of these respondents in the West (63%), in the Center and the South - half. At the same time, in the East, the relative majority (55%) indicated that they are not ready to defend their homeland with weapons in their hands (35% are ready, 10% are undecided). Patriotic more among men and wealthy respondents.

62% of respondents support the idea of ??establishing a public holiday of the Day of Defender of Ukraine on October 14 (25% do not support). At the same time, half (51%) are against the abolition of the celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day on February 23 (in 2017 there were a few more - 56%). It should be noted that if there are more supporters of the introduction of the holiday on October 14 in the West, then there are more opponents of the abolition of the Soviet holiday in the South and East. There are more supporters of the idea of ??establishing the Day of Defender of Ukraine on Pokrov among the more affluent, higher education and villagers. Interestingly, there is no difference between the sexes in supporting or not supporting both initiatives.. In addition, among supporters of the idea of ??introducing October 14 as the Day of Defender of Ukraine, 42% do not support the abolition of the celebration of the Soviet holiday on February 23.

45% of respondents support the idea of ??recognizing the OUN-UPA as participants in the struggle for the state independence of Ukraine (in 2017 - 49%). Have a third of the opposite opinion, almost a quarter undecided. Since the beginning of research in 2010, the level of support for this initiative has increased 2.5 times.

Most of those who support the recognition of the OUN-UPA - in the West (80%). In the Center of such respondents 45%. Those who hold the opposite opinion most of all among the inhabitants of the South and East (respectively 52% and 46%). Relatively more of those who support the recognition of the OUN-UPA, among men, more affluent and those with a high level of education.

56% of respondents have a positive attitude to the idea of ??reconciliation of the soldiers of the Soviet army and the OUN-UPA. 22% expressed the opposite opinion, another 23% found it difficult to answer. Most of those who have a positive attitude towards reconciliation are in the West (70%), and least of all in the East (40%). Somewhat more support the idea of ??men, villagers and older respondents. Among the supporters of the recognition of the OUN-UPA 79% of respondents agree with the idea of ??reconciliation. At the same time, among those who do not support the idea of ??recognizing the national insurgent movement, such 36%.

The absolute majority of respondents (82%) agree with the thesis that during the Second World War the soldiers of the Soviet army defended their homeland. However, compared to previous years, their number is slightly less (in 2017 - 90%, 2012 - 96%). 51% of respondents agree with the thesis that during the Second World War, soldiers of the OUN-UPA defended their homeland. The level of support for the last thesis is the same as last year (increased by 1.5 times compared to 2012).

Supporters of the thesis that the soldiers of the OUN-UPA defended their homeland, most of all in the West, least of all in the South and East.

Audience: the population of Ukraine is 18 years and older. The sample is representative by age, gender, region and type of settlement.. Sample population: 2000 respondents.
