Lawyer of the Public Verdict Foundation Irina Biryukova, who handed over the video of the torture of the prisoner Evgeni Makarov to the editorial offices of Novaya Gazeta in prison No. 1 in the Yaroslavl region, left Russia because of threats to her. This was reported in the social network Facebook on Monday, July 23, representatives of the fund.
"Biryukova left the country and appealed to the official bodies of the Russian Federation for state protection for herself and her family," the organization, which protects the rights of citizens who suffered from illegal actions of Russian law enforcement bodies.
The lawyer filed an application to the head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin, in which she said that "some of the video figurants had voiced threats of revenge" in her address.
Representatives of the fund considered that the probability of "personal reprisal is real". In this regard, Biryukova at the time of consideration of the application for state protection will be outside the Russian Federation. Its exact location is not called.
The organization "Public Verdict" clarified that the lawyer also appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation with a request to inspect the prosecutor's office in the Yaroslavl region. This is due to the fact that the regional investigative authorities repeatedly refused to open a criminal case because of possible torture in the colony.
"Despite repeated complaints and statements of the victim for a year and a half, no violations were found," the fund explained.
In addition, the lawyer asked the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to transfer the investigation into the criminal case of torture from Yaroslavl to Moscow.
According to information available to Irina Biryukova, the Yaroslavl investigator involved in the conduct of the case is a relative of the employee of the colony of Sipan Mamayana. "Mamaian is one of the figurants of the scandalous video," the representatives of the "Public Verdict".
Earlier 17 employees of the colony identified by video with beatings of the prisoner were suspended from performing their duties.
Tortures in the Yaroslavl colony On Friday, July 20, Novaya Gazeta published a video in which the colony employees mock the prisoner. In particular, he is put on the table face down, beaten with clubs, poured water on his head from the bucket.
According to the publication, the crime occurred on June 29, 2017.
On the day of the publication of the video, human rights defenders posted on Facebook a list of names and surnames of the colony workers who, according to their information, participated in the torture of the prisoner.
After the publication of the TFR initiated a criminal case of abuse of authority with the use of violence, and the FSIN for the Yaroslavl region began an internal audit.
