The storming of the border detachment in Lugansk began at 4 am on June 1, 2014. Lugansk border detachment was located on the edge of the city, just behind the residential quarter, which, according to the wicked irony of fate, is called Mirny. The militants threw to the assault about half a thousand people who attacked the border guards directly from the roofs and apartments of houses of civilians.
The border guards did not give up and took the fight. On June 2, within eight hours, they repulsed the attacks of militants under the anthem of Ukraine. Terrorists suffered losses, but still they climbed the outpost.
The Lugansk frontier post was of strategic importance, as was the airport and the military unit. In an almost occupied city, these were the only points where Ukrainian forces were still stationed and the Ukrainian flag was flying, so the terrorists simply needed to dislodge our forces from here.
It was difficult for the frontier detachment to keep defense alone against superior enemy forces, so they requested help. The command of ATO sent one Ukrainian fighter that circled over Lugansk and inflicted pinpoint strikes.
Since the militants were occupied in apartment houses, our aircraft could not fully work, because there was a big threat to harm civilians. Therefore, it was not possible to significantly help the border guards from the sky. At the headquarters of the ATO, they reported that the destroyer destroyed two mortar charges of Russian mercenaries. However, in order to reverse the situation, this was not enough.
The armed forces of Ukraine at the time defended Lugansk airport, so they could not come to the rescue either.
In any case, it was stated in the headquarters of the ATU. Therefore, the border guards after the four-day siege received an order to depart. Officers and volunteers - only 32 border guards - went to the airport with weapons. Others, disguised as civilians, through Lugansk. This was the beginning of the full occupation of the city. Subsequently, the militants rushed to storm the military unit, and then began the heroic defense of the airport.
