From today, the first German bans for cars with diesel engines entered into force in Hamburg. Bans are introduced on two sections of the main road in the Altona area. One of the sites has a length of 580 meters, the other - in 1.6 km.

In one case, the ban applies only to trucks that do not meet the Euro-5 environmental standard, and in the other - to cars lower than the Euro-6 standard. For residents living in the area of ??these sites, there are exceptions, and for others - bypasses, reports DW.

The Hamburg police in the first stage will inform motorists of the restrictions imposed and carry out spot checks of transport. After the transitional period, fines of 25 euros for cars and 75 euros for trucks will be charged for violations.

The Hamburg authorities introduced the first restrictions on diesel vehicles after the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig in February allowed cities and communes to introduce appropriate bans to reduce nitrogen oxide in the air.

Environmental organizations, however, regarded the actions of the Hamburg authorities as a purely symbolic step.

"It is not enough to make less polluted only a few hundred meters of the street. Cleaner air for all can be achieved only by admitting a small number of cars to the central districts of the cities, "said Greensex representative Niklas Shinerle.

Minister of Transport of Germany Andreas Scheuer expressed his hope that Hamburg will not be the beginning of a wave of prohibitions for diesel cars. He recalled that if in 2016 air pollution standards were violated in 90 cities in Germany, in 2017 - only in 66.
