Died the famous American historian Richard Pipes. In recent years, he held the position of Professor of Russian History at Harvard University and headed the University Research Center for the Study of Russia.

Richard Pipes was born in Poland in 1923. After the outbreak of World War II, his family emigrated to the United States, where a future historian joined the military intelligence service.

In the 1970s Pipes was the chief scientific consultant of the Center for the Study of Russia at Stanford University.

Later - an advisor to several US presidents on issues related to the Soviet Union. In the early 1980s - headed the Soviet department of the US National Security Council.

Richard Pipes was a consistent anti-communist and supported the dissident movement in the USSR. Already in the 90 years he became a member of the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya.

The author of 23 books on the history of Russia and the USSR, Richard Pipes became widely known. Some of his works have been translated into Russian.
