Schools of Lugansk and Donetsk regions received 72 training models for lessons on mine safety. On them children should learn to recognize explosive objects and correctly act at their detection. This is the first draft of the mine action strategy developed, the Ministry of Temporary Occupied Territories. Soon the whole new strategy will be tested on one of the bulk of Donbass. And if it shows its effectiveness, it will be spread to other territories, Radio Liberty notes..
The models are 3 booths displaying mines, cartridges, grenades, artillery shells and other explosive items that are used in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, and which pose a danger to civilians. Thanks to these stands, students should learn to recognize such objects and act correctly when they are detected. These stands were made from the budget of the Swiss Confederation, and the Ambassador of Switzerland to Ukraine Guillaume Scheuerer brought them to Donbass.
"The best experts were involved in the development of the stand. These are representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Center for Humanitarian Demining in Geneva. No matter how many these stands, but the cost of their manufacture is much lower than the cost of living, "- notes Guillaume Scheuer.
It is planned that in the first place these stands will be sent to schools that are near the line of demarcation. Since it is these children who are at risk. Later, the stands will be shown in other educational institutions of the region.
Such training in the risks borne by mines and other explosive remnants of war is the first line of the overall mine action strategy, said Minister for Temporary Occupied Territories Vadim Chernysh.
According to him, a mine action program has been developed and a profile law is being prepared. The strategy is based on international experience and international standards of mine action. In addition to training the population for risks, the strategy also includes the demining process itself, the introduction of a unified accounting system, as well as assistance to the victims. Soon the strategy is planned to be tested on one of the bulk of the Donbass, says Vadim Chernysh.
"A community will be elected, in which all those involved in mine action will be coordinated. In order to have complete information, mark territory, make announcements for the public. It is necessary to work out a model of interaction and coordination that can be extended further. If people have to live among mine pollution, then at least until the danger is eliminated, it is necessary to mark the territory, identify dangerous places. Prepare people for this. Therefore, these are important projects, "- said Vadim Chernysh.
According to the minister, most likely the pilot will be a community in Lugansk region.
According to the Lugansk regional civil-military administration, in the Lugansk region since the beginning of the conflict on mines and because of careless handling of explosive objects 72 people were killed. Another 160 people were injured.
