In my opinion, Ukraine's transition to the Latin alphabet is inappropriate and unnecessary. Ukrainian Cyrillic is an element of our identity and millennial culture. To a certain extent, the transition to the Latin alphabet will be a rejection of this heritage, the historian, the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory Vladimir Vyatrovich writes on the NW portal.

And then, such a transition is impossible to implement quickly. History shows that the most rapid transition to the Latin alphabet took place in Turkey. And this is an example of the behavior of an authoritarian state, and if we are trying to build democracy, then we should not use it.

The proposal to introduce the Latin alphabet in parallel with the existence of the Cyrillic alphabet is also inappropriate. This de facto will be the beginning of trilingualism in Ukraine: we will have a Russian, which is still dominant in our information space, and two versions of the Ukrainian.

Latin can suspend the real process of Ukrainization, that is, the transition of citizens from Russian into Ukrainian. Moreover, the introduction of the Latin alphabet may even have the opposite effect. Many people, especially older people, will perceive the cyrillic Russian much better than the Latin Ukrainian.

Concerning the argument that the transition to the Latin alphabet can bring us closer to Europe and separate from the "Russian world" - neither is so easily given.

Let's look at Moldova. There they switched to the Latin alphabet and this does not prevent the pro-Russian politicians from influencing the local politics and even winning elections.

In the end, the transition to the Latin alphabet is not a prerequisite for integration into the EU.

The European Union positions itself as a system of different national cultures and, in the context of our integration there, the preservation of Ukrainian and national is very important.
