As experts found out, the underground cavities of the Mayan cave were used for sacrifices. Also during the research, divers found the bones of people and animals, whose age reached at least nine thousand years. In particular, at the bottom lay the fossils of creatures that lived during the last glacial epoch, including giant sloths, bears and gomphoteries.
According to scientists, the cave was a trap for those who inadvertently fell into it: animals and people could not get out of there.
In addition, parts of pottery, wall paintings and objects of religious worship were found.
"140 of almost 200 items belonged to the Maya culture," noted archaeologists.
Recall, as previously reported, "URA-Inform," the archaeologists at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem discovered a new cave where the Dead Sea scrolls were once kept - ancient manuscripts.
