During the study, the scientists studied the images that were obtained with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which took pictures of eroded rocky ledges. The researchers found that ice forms a thick layer, rather than a thin crust.

According to scientists, they were able to detect pure frozen water that can be used by astronauts during the construction of a colony on the Red Planet.

In addition, scientists believe that the study of these deposits can tell about the climate of Mars in the past.

The researchers suggest that the ice deposits formed as a result of heavy snowfalls in the distant past of the Red Planet. They also noticed an active erosion of the ledges, caused by the melting of the exposed ice layer.

As previously reported in URA-Inform, NASA released a map showing temperature anomalies in the world. In particular, the map shows deviations from the average tamperature in a certain region.
