Hart entered the history of Cuba as an active participant in the revolutionary struggle and the Minister of Education, in which, in 1959, immediately after the victory of the revolution, a campaign was launched to combat illiteracy.

Together with Fidel Castro in 1953, he became one of the founders of the "July 26 Movement". It was a revolutionary organization whose activities are directed against the then leader of Cuba, Fulgencio Batista. The movement was named in honor of the storming of the fortified barracks of Moncada in Santiago de Cuba.

He also wrote several books, including "Profiles" (1995) - a collection of texts on the life of famous Cuban politicians and intellectuals.

Since 1997, he has been popularizing the personality and ideological heritage of the national hero, the fighter for Cuba's independence Jose Marti (1853-1895).

Hart was an honorary doctor of several universities. He was awarded with high state awards of Cuba, including the orders of Jose Marti and Felix Varela of the first degree.
