The Ministry of Justice of Tajikistan has prepared and sent to the registry offices a catalog of 6,000 names for children born in families of representatives of the titular nation - Tajiks, - said the deputy head of the department Hakim Mirsayzod.
"There are 6 thousand names in this catalog, which parents are obliged to call their newborn children," he said..
According to the deputy minister, the catalog will be provided to parents who come to the registry office to obtain a birth certificate for children. They must choose their child's national name among those listed in the catalog.
"If the parents do not agree to give their children names from the catalog, they should apply with a proposal to name the child in a special commission that will decide whether to allow parents or not to name the child by the name they offered," Mirisayzod.
For citizens of a different nationality living in Tajikistan, exceptions are made - they can choose any names for their children, according to Sputnik Tajikistan.
Amendments to the Law on State Registration of Civil Status Acts initiated by the government were approved by the deputies of the lower house of the Tajik parliament in January 2016.
Earlier, the Minister of Justice of the Republic Rustam Shokhmurod noted that in the country will be forbidden to give the child a name "degrading the honor and dignity of a person". As an example, he cited names such as Sang (Stone), Zog (Voron), Gurg (Wolf), Jorub (Venik), Sanoat (Craft, Industry).
