GAZ-51 became the most massive Soviet truck in history. From 1946 to 1975, 3,481,033 of these machines were produced, which became the main "motor" of the national economy of the USSR. On the basis of such a massive truck produced a variety of special versions. Since 1949 at the Gorky bus plant began to produce a small bus GZA-651. Since 1952, the production of such buses under the PAZ-651 brand has moved to the Pavlovsk bus plant, and since 1958 at the Kurgan bus plant, KavZ-651. It was on the basis of these buses and at the same factories that the modification of the autoclave with the index "659" was produced: from 1954 to 1961 - on the PAZ, and from 1961 to 1968 - on the KAVZ.

For the vast territory of the Soviet Union, car stalls were a very relevant type of transport. They were used to supply food and industrial goods to rural residents, where there are no fixed stores. Small mobile shops became the main trade points in the areas of development of virgin lands of Kazakhstan, Altai and the Volga region.

Any car dealer had to meet several requirements: to be large enough, to have a "showcase" for sale on the one hand, to be reliable enough and durable to bring your goods to remote areas on bad country roads, easy to maintain, and, if necessary, repaired in Field conditions. All of these requirements were met by autolocks on the GAZ-51 chassis. The launch of the lines began at the Pavlovo bus plant in the mid-1950s, and until 1961, the company produced 5200 copies of PAZ-659. In the course of the production of carpets, the design was modified, experimented with the size and number of showcases for the goods, in 1957 radically revised the design: after the base bus PAZ-651, the body of the car became completely metal (before its frame was wooden) - this modification received letter "A" In the title. Chassis also changed:

the standard GAZ-51I chassis did not always cope with rural bad roads, as a result, a special all-wheel drive chassis GAZ-63E. At the same time, the index of the autoclave did not change depending on the installed chassis.

PAZ-659 - not the first special version of GAZ-51 in the collection of the Museum of Automotive Technology. Earlier visitors of the Museum could already see GAZ-51 AM-3 - a police car for the transport of personnel. Now he was supplemented by a toiler of rural settlements that regularly supplied people with all the essentials 60 years ago.
