The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has registered a bill that provides for the introduction of language quotas for print media: 50% of the text in them should be in Ukrainian.
This was stated by the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Information Policy, People's Deputy of Ukraine ("Popular Front") Viktoriya Syumar in an interview with Liga. Net.
According to the parliamentarian, with the implementation of this initiative, the authorities can go by way of incentives, not orders. For example, to provide tax or promotional benefits for those publications that will fulfill the requirement.
As for the Internet media, Syamar assured that they are not going to impose any restrictions on them.
"This is not even considered, the state should not regulate this. The difference is that television operates on the state frequency resource. The state has the right to regulate what it gives its resource for - it's a European approach, "she explained..
As reported by the "Observer", previously Syamar warned that breaches of scandalous quotas by TV channels would be punished not only by a fine but also by the deprivation of a broadcasting license.
