Ukraine took 102nd place in the rating of media freedom in the world as of 2017, which was the international organization "Reporters without Borders".
As Deutsche Welle notes, compared with 2016, Ukraine climbed five positions.
The spokeswoman for Reporters Without Borders Ulrike Gruska explained that the improvement of Ukrainian positions is due in particular to the reduction of violence against journalists.
It should be noted that the organization also announced a narrowing of the freedom of the press in a number of democratic countries, in particular in the United States, which lost two positions and ended up in 43rd place.
The reason is the growing frequency of investigations against investment journalists and exposers, as well as detentions of media representatives during the coverage of protest actions.
Poland in the rule of the right-wing conservatives lost seven positions and took 54th place, in particular, due to the strengthening of control over the power of the public broadcaster. The situation with freedom of the press in Great Britain (40 place), Netherlands (5) and Canada (22) also worsened..
Russia remained on the 148th place due to the suppression of the opposition media, Turkey with tough measures after the failed coup lost four positions and took 155 place.
At the head of the same rating were Norway and Sweden, which improved their results through liberal access to public information and legislation that protects the sources of journalists.
"Reporters without borders" calculate rating indicators based on a number of parameters, in particular media diversity and their independence, journalists' working conditions and self-censorship, legal protection and institutional transparency.
As reported by the "Observer", previously a member of the board of "Reporters without Borders" Gemma Pertsgen presented a report on the situation in the Ukrainian media space.
