The tragedy occurred on the night of April 26, 1986, as a result of an experiment on the use of the kinetic energy of the rotor of a turbogenerator as a backup source of energy for the needs of the station.

At the same time, the reactor was located on the right bank of the Pripyat River a few kilometers from the towns of Chernobyl and Pripyat in the Kiev region.

So, for this power unit was reduced to a minimum, but then because of the technical characteristics of the reactor began to increase sharply, which led to a series of explosions. Thus, the building of the engine room partially collapsed. In addition, about 190 tons of radioactive substances were released into the atmosphere, some of which were in the air.

In connection with this, the fire lasted two weeks.

Tens of thousands of people died from the effects of radiation, and the health of millions of civilians in Ukraine, Belarus and Europe was undermined.

Note that at the end of November 2016, the destroyed reactor was covered with an arch of the New Safe Confinement. A new construction was pushed onto the old sarcophagus, which was erected in 1986 over an exploded reactor. It is planned to be used for 100 years.
