Ukrainian actress originally from Kharkov Yulia Buinovskaya told how at the beginning of her studies at Karpenko-Kary University she could have lost the opportunity to realize herself in the profession due to ignorance of the Ukrainian language and internal resistance to studying it. According to the artist, known for her roles in the TV series “A Couple of Slings” and the film “Mavka”. True Myth,” the situation was so difficult that the teachers even considered the option of expelling her. Buinovskaya spoke about this in an interview with Marichka Padalko, describing in detail her path from a complete misunderstanding of the language to the conscious need to speak it to work in the Ukrainian industry.

The actress noted that she came to study from Kharkov without knowledge of Ukrainian, which significantly complicated the process. She could not improvise even within the framework of the curriculum, because she simply did not speak the language at a sufficient level.

“I didn’t know Ukrainian yet. That's what the problem was. I couldn't improvise even on that prose. I came with absolute ignorance,” she recalled.

Despite the fact that the school was formally Ukrainian-language, according to Buinovskaya, almost no one spoke Ukrainian in everyday life. The only exception was the teacher of the specialized subject, for whom the use of the state language was fundamental.

The first training courses became a test for the actress. She admitted that she not only did not know the language, but also had no desire to learn it.

" I didn't want to learn Ukrainian. I didn’t understand: if we all communicate in Russian, play Russian plays, why is this necessary,” Buinovskaya explained.

In particular, the actress cited her father’s phrase, which, according to her, influenced her perception of the language for a long time: “This is not Russian, this is Kharkov”. It was with this idea that she grew up, which later became one of the reasons for her internal resistance.

The situation was complicated by the fact that, due to the language barrier, she could not fully express her thoughts, which created a false impression of her professional qualities. The teacher even called her “temperamentless” and planned to expel her.

The turning point was the second year, when the actress realized that without knowledge of Ukrainian she would not be able to realize herself in the profession.. Subsequently, she began to actively learn the language, although the process was difficult. The final impetus was the refusal of a role in one of the projects precisely because of the language issue.

“They told me frankly: “Yulia, everything is fine.”. But your language is lousy,” the actress recalled.

After this, Buinovskaya and her husband decided to completely switch to Ukrainian in everyday life.. According to her, this was done deliberately - at first, in order to be able to work in Ukrainian projects.

The actress claims: back then it was difficult even on film sets, where they continued to communicate in Russian. However, gradually the situation changed.

“When my thoughts became Ukrainian, then I felt that she was mine,” the actress summed up.
