The Croatian city of Rijeka became the cultural capital of Europe in 2020

Two ports - Rijeka in Croatia and Galway in Ireland - selected as the European Capital of Culture 2020. Croatian city began preparing for festive events.

The mayor of Rijeka believes that becoming a cultural capital of Europe is a great honor and great responsibility.



Events in Rijeka will be held under the slogan “Port of Diversity”. They will reflect three themes: work, migration and water.

Rijeka stands at the confluence of the Riechina River in the Adriatic Sea. It is the third largest city in the country and the largest Croatian port. Rijeka became the first Croatian city chosen by the European Capital of Culture.

Over 600 cultural events held in Rijeka over the year. 250 organizations are involved in their preparation. Partners from 40 countries will also help..
