Canadian Alessia Kara won the award in the category "Best New Artist". She was the only woman to receive one of the main prizes.
Such stars as Lady Gaga, Kesha, Lordi and SZA did not receive any prizes. Of the 86 prizes, only 17 were received by women.
The disparity in terms of female winners was somewhat strange, given the fact that the organizers of the ceremony stressed their support for the campaigns #TimesUp and #MeToo, opposing sexual harassment and discrimination. Most of those attending the Grammy Awards came with white roses in support of these campaigns. This is reported by BBC Russian Service.
