Georgia's future political course is highly dependent on developments in Ukraine, Stanford University political scientist Francis Fukuyama said in an interview with RFE/RL.
“Everything is at stake for Georgia. Georgia is now at a fork in the road where it can continue its efforts to join the EU, perhaps even NATO, or go in the direction of Russia. And there are forces in Georgia that are politically pulling it in both directions.. The choice will greatly depend on what happens in Ukraine, because the stronger Russia is, the more the Russian path is strengthened,” says Fukuyama.

He emphasized that every time Russian President Vladimir Putin weakens, every country around Russia has more freedom of action..
“Therefore, I think that the fate of Georgia is connected with the war in Ukraine,” the political scientist explained..
Earlier, Fukuyama said that as long as former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and his Georgian Dream party remain in power, EU membership is unlikely for Georgia.. According to the political scientist, the policy of the EU and the US should not be directed against Georgia as a whole, but against the government, causing shifts towards Russia.
