This provision was adopted in March 2022 and initially granted the right of residence to refugees from Ukraine until March 3, 2023. The right of residence was supposed to automatically continue twice every six months, but this directive has been repealed at the EU level.

According to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, from February 24 to December 31, 2022, about 91 thousand refugees from Ukraine were registered in the country, about 66 thousand of them are still in Austria.. At the same time, about half of the Ukrainians who fled to Austria from the war want to stay in the country forever..
