The Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to the law on the procedure for military service under contract by foreigners and stateless persons in all military formations, which allowed citizens of other states to defend Ukraine not only in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but also in the National Guard and other military formations. 321 people's deputies voted for the corresponding bill in the second reading.

According to the explanatory note to the bill, since the beginning of the war, many foreign citizens have expressed a desire to voluntarily defend Ukraine, for which a number of laws have been adopted. However, these laws indicated only those units that are subordinate to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and did not include the units formed under the National Guard of Ukraine, in particular the Azov regiment, where many foreign citizens serve.. In this regard, foreign military personnel serving, in particular, in the Azov regiment, cannot legally stay on the territory of Ukraine and will not be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship in the future..

Thus, foreigners who conclude a contract with the National Guard will be able to legally stay on the territory of Ukraine during the validity of the contract, receive permission to immigrate under the quota of the Cabinet of Ministers and the opportunity to legally reside on the territory of Ukraine.

To obtain an immigration permit, individuals can submit a document confirming their service in the National Guard.

Also, in a simplified manner, foreigners from the National Guard will be able to apply for Ukrainian citizenship. To do this, you only need the right to unilaterally renounce the citizenship of Russia or Belarus.

Persons who, in the performance of their duties, received injuries incompatible with the extension of service may receive an immigration permit, regardless of how long they served in the Ukrainian army.
