The North Atlantic Alliance will not change its policy regarding Ukraine's membership in NATO in the near future, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba believes.
“That is, I expect that in the near future NATO will continue to confirm that the door is open and the decision of the Bucharest summit remains in force.. Ukraine also remains on the track of Euro-Atlantic integration, but I do not see the potential in the near future for NATO to change its position like the European Union and start doing concrete things to ensure Ukraine's entry into the Alliance,” he said in an interview with Lb. ua.
The minister noted that although as of February 24, NATO was in an advanced position with respect to the EU, because they already had a decision that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance, since that time the EU has already gone to the second round, and NATO has remained there..
At the same time, he noted that NATO itself destroyed its entire narrative, which it used to deny membership to Ukraine..
“They told us:“ We can’t go forward to the border, we will have a common border with Russia. What are you talking about, this is Russia, hey, escalation”. Please, how many now they have two thousand kilometers of a common border and NATO will stand at the gates of St. Petersburg. That is, all these arguments about why it is impossible to take Ukraine into the Alliance have been nullified. This is what we constantly talked about, that they came up with all this just to justify their unwillingness to integrate us,” Kuleba said..
He also pointed to similar Russian behavior, which had long threatened NATO over the issue of Ukraine's accession, but, in fact, did not respond to the statement about the membership of Sweden and Finland..
Answering the question whether the security guarantees of individual countries are some kind of alternative to membership in the Alliance, the minister noted that this is just filling the vacuum between now and the moment when Ukraine becomes a member of the collective security mechanism.
" But we have a war, we understand that NATO will not take us tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. So what do we need to do? Sit and say: there is nothing, we will sit and wait until NATO picks us up? And so the subject of guarantees arises.. Unless it is Article 5 (Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty provides that an armed attack on one or more Alliance states is an attack on all of them and each of the member countries is obliged to provide assistance to the party or those attacked). we will all be at war, then let's develop at least some security guarantees for Ukraine. What is the point of states giving us these guarantees? Because if Ukraine collapses, then they will be the ones to rake up all these problems, which will become much larger,” Kuleba said..
The Foreign Minister noted that sooner or later Ukraine will become a member of a certain collective security mechanism, but at the moment it is not clear “whether it will be NATO or it will be something already created around Ukraine”.
