The Russian invasion nearly two months ago plunged Ukraine into a human rights and humanitarian crisis that has devastated the lives of civilians across the country and beyond.. Such a statement was made on Friday by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, calling for respect for international law, in particular international humanitarian law.

“During these eight weeks, international humanitarian law was not just ignored, but it seemed to be completely thrown aside,” Bachelet said..

“Practically every resident of Bucha with whom our colleagues spoke told us about the death of a relative, neighbor or even a stranger. We know that much more needs to be done to uncover what happened there, and we also know that Bucha is not an isolated case,” said the High Commissioner.

Russian armed forces indiscriminately shell and bomb settlements, state on the UN website. At the same time, the Russian army is killing civilians and destroying hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure, these are actions that can be equated with war crimes.

From 24 February to midnight on 20 April, the Mission documented and confirmed 5,264 civilian casualties - 2,345 killed and 2,919 injured. Of these, 92.3 percent (2,266 killed and 2,593 injured) were registered in government-controlled territory. About 7.7% of casualties (79 killed and 326 wounded) were recorded in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions controlled by the Russian armed forces and associated armed groups.

“We know the real numbers will be much higher as the horrors taking place in hard-fought areas like Mariupol become known (over time),” said UN human rights chief.

“The scale of summary executions of civilians in areas previously occupied by Russian troops is also revealed.. It is necessary to ensure the preservation of evidence and the dignified treatment of the remains, as well as psychological and other assistance to the victims and their families,” Bachelet added..

Recall that recently The New York Times published a map of the killings of civilians in Bucha. The Russians killed recklessly, intensifying terror against civilians after every success of the UAF.
