Mammadov: Opening of ICC investigation in Ukraine is not Ukrainian merit

The opening of the investigation of the International Criminal Court on Ukraine is not Ukrainian merit, said an expert on international criminal law, Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine in 2019-2021 Gunduz Mammadov.

“Or that otherwise it would have happened without the ratification of the Rome Statute (RC). Thus, although the authorities of Ukraine, together with human rights activists, have made a lot of efforts since 2016 to establish work with the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and send evidence of grave crimes committed by Russia (these include war crimes, crimes against humanity, the crime of aggression and genocide). He added that the opportunity to apply and avoid additional procedures before opening an investigation for these countries was due to the ratification of the RS. Unfortunately, the appeal of an unprecedented number of countries to the ICC on the situation in Ukraine became possible precisely because of the new stage of aggression launched by Putin and other members of the top leadership of the Russian Federation on February 24.
