The United States is ready to work with the newly elected President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, they are going to do this, following their own rules. In particular, one of the priority tasks for the United States is to prevent Ankara from buying Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. This statement was made by Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell. "Turkey faces difficult external and internal challenges We are ready to work with the newly elected President Erdogan on these challenges. But we will clearly state that the issues in our bilateral relations should be resolved, "he said at a hearing in the Senate, RIA Novosti reports.. The official called those questions on which the US wanted to achieve a solution. Among them, the refusal to purchase Turkey's S-400 air defense missile systems, reach agreements on the forces involved in Syria and the release of detained US citizens. He also listed the reasons why Ankara should cooperate with the White House. Among them were Russia, which "increased its naval presence (in the Mediterranean), seeking to strengthen the sphere of influence," as well as balancing Iran and fighting the IG (a terrorist group banned in the Russian Federation).

US persistently seeks cancellation of decision on Ankara's purchase of Russian S-400s. Otherwise, Turkey is threatened with an end to the supply of US high-tech weapons, including fifth-generation F-35 fighters or the imposition of sanctions against it. The corresponding two versions of the defense budget are under consideration by the Congress. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, having learned about the contents of the bills, said that Ankara will not refuse to purchase air defense missile systems from Russia.
